We were on our way to Grande Prairie and this was the first planned cap stop for the day. As far as the logs show, no one has yet been able to provide a shot of the actual cap. I came prepared for a valiant attempt. Gaiters.... check, PVC pipe... check, suction device... check, flashlight... check, camera... check. I arrived at the parking spot mentioned by vdD and then went over to inspect the cap area. Full of water... check. I spotted the survey marker by the fence, but there was no sign of the stakes left behind by rat root and dronnord. Perhaps they were hidden in the tall grass. No worries... I was sure I would find it based on the previous context shots. I walked back across the tracks to the truck to get on my gear when I noticed a second vehicle and Mrs. TiE talking to someone. It turned out to be a very nice CN police woman. She was quite concerned that we were in the area as it is CN private property. She asked that we leave ASAP and was concerned for us as 2 trains were due to come through shortly. Not only is crossing the tracks to get to the cap not allowed, but apparently the access road is also CN property (although I don't recall seeing any signs saying so). In any event, we respectfully obliged and left the area. Failure to find BCP355... check.

Thanks for an interesting outing OFTH and thanks to the CN officer for being so understanding.

I drove near this one on another trip to the area and after finding the access road, there were a couple of trains in the way. We came prepared this time and after arriving to find no trains int he way, we loaded up with our metal detector, axe, hatchet, two shovels, and a pick. Oh, we also brought our GPS! Surprisingly, we didn't need the GPS as the location was marked with three stakes. Unfortunately, it was under a lot of snow and ice. After removing the snow, I started out with the hatchet and pick, but had to switch to the axe for the longer handle as the hole got deeper! AFter about a foot of ice, I broke through and then there was the water! We could not actually see it, but used a long screwdriver to touch it and verify that we found circular metal object. Thanks for this interesting cap!

Octupus Lake (Really just a swamp of grass and marsh)

What an adventure to say the least,as Rat Root was driving I was navigating If you can listening to a Nuvi navigating..!!! Google earth showed a R/R track that split into 3 tracks near GZ and we were well prepared to walk in to this Cap.I started my day at 4:30 AM..Sleepy Hollow style) drove down to Rat Roots place and proceeded to knock caches off along the way.It helps when the driver has every cache within the 100 miles radius of his house..If you cannot find it you just YELL up the bank at the truck and a hint will come down to you..sometimes....most times they were all pretty easy Ammo Cans and BIG BIG LockNLock`s and a few micros ...anyway on with the tale..we finally got into the cap and soon realized we were on the mark as I found a MP and a piece of Rebar at RM #2 as stated on the spin sheet. We were approx 13m from the cap.I waded into the marsh hopping on the grass hummocks until I was at GZ , did a metal sweep and then a picket probe to the sound of metal on metal.I reached into the brackish water and found the customary cap and pedestal base under about a foot of water.

Logged my coordinates got the usual pictures and we were off after pushing a small poplar stick into the skeg beside said cap. This is now well flagged and ready for a dig up.As Rat Root explained we were interrogated by a CN employee about being on their property. There is no other way to get to this cap without bushwacking and going across a very large marsh called Octupus Lake.Remember to play safe if you go near this one and be aware that you are trespassing if you are crossing the tracks. TFTC TFTAdventure..By the way..it is over the rubber boots..

2010-10-09T20:00:00Found itrat root
Dronnord and myself went and found BCP 355 Octopus lake today.
I learnt a lot about how to find brass caps from an experienced survey. We drove to within 100 meters of the cap. It was buried in 1 foot of dirty water. When we got back to the truck we got questioned as to why we crossed CN's tracks. (both of us where wearing vests) Well dronnord being a supervisor of surveyors made it all sound legit. This cap will be findable when the ice is a foot thick. Take a good axe with you. We marked the cap with a stick and flagging
