My favourite kind of a cap - on a mountain, with a view. Story and photos in my log for the adjacent Burnt Timber Fire Lookout Cache. Thanks for the cap!

With TiE Jr. home from university for the holidays, we elected to go for a hike and find one of the elevated caps on my unfound list. The Burnt Timber Lookout cap has been on my radar for a while now and I couldn't understand why it had so few visits. Only 2 capping teams have visited this cache since it was published and the last was by BVPete and his son almost 5 years ago and before I had found my first cache. I managed to convince BVPete that he needed to make a return visit and he gladly agreed to tag along to our great pleasure. The 22km drive in from Hwy 40 was on a well used oil and gas access road and was well plowed and excellently maintained. When we arrived at the planned parking coords, it appeared that a new well had been completed recently. There was some activity going on and we didn't want to get in their way. We drove a short distance to the old lookout road, but the plows had buried the access and we didn't want to park on the main road. Out came the shovels and we dug out a parking spot. That's one way to get the heart pumping before a hike. There was quite a bit of snow on the road up so we donned the snowshoes and told TiE Jr that it was the job of the youngest to break trail. Phew! Glad we brought him. We elected to use the shortcut up the ridge that the previous groups used to descend (see the SAB Trailmaps). Man was that steep. We had to do a short rock band scramble on our chosen route but it could be easily avoided. We soon got to the ridgetop and that is when the wind hit us. There was a strong, gusty west wind the rest of the trip along the ridge. When we got to the cap, the wind had managed to keep the open areas snow free and the cap and post were well exposed. What a great spot with terrific views. We quickly retreated back down to get out of the cold wind. On the way back, we again used the shortcut, but this time avoided the highpoint and contoured around eventually dropping down a steep hillside to the road. TiE Jr slipped at one point and took a short slide down the hill. Fortunately I was below him and taking me out stopped his slide. Ouch! We ended up hiking just under 9km with a total elevation gain of 550m. The shortcut removes a major elevation reversal and reduces the distance by over a km each way. This would make a great summer hike. Thanks for the cap OFTH!

Shigman and I went up to the site of the former Burnt Timber Forestry LO today to find this Brass Cap and a Sleepy hollow cache. It was pretty misty, so our views were limited, but still a terrific place and we enjoyed the hike up on the well-packed trail. After finding the cap we checked out a nearby well-constructed snow cave and headed down making use of a shortcut to avoid the large elevation loss and gain required on the official road. Thanks for selecting this survey control point for your Brass Cap series ofth. What a great place!

Great day out with BVPete to find this brass cap and a nearby cache. It was a little snowy which ruined what must be a great view but it was still worth the hike up. We found a neat little snow cave that someone had built and used it for awhile to take a break from the Chinook wind that was blowing. A great trail to a great location. Thanks for selecting this brass cap!

The cap is in good shape. Took OFTH geocoin; left golf ball.
