After the nice hike up the mountain, this was an easy find. Can't miss it! The full story of the day is on SH's nearby summit cache. Thanks for posting this cap, it's a nice one!

What a perfect day this was to finally hike to the summit of Allsmoke Mountain! The cap was very well protected by rocks and in a wonderful location with great views. Thank you for the cap and hike; the picture and numbers have been sent.

This has been my closest unfound cap for quite awhile now so I decided that since the road opened up today would be the day to do it. I set off early, reaching the trailhead about 08:15. Tucker and I set out across the pasture and through the boggy section, across the creek and then started to gain the ridge itself. The first few km were quite nice but soon we started running into snow and more snow. By the time we slogged to the summit the snow was consistently knee deep, enough that I wished I had brought the snow shoes along. The summit cairn was quickly found and the brass exposed, which is better than I did with the other two caches long this route.

I forgot the sunscreen so I got a bit too much sun, as evidenced by the headache I have right now. Round trip distance was about 15km and took me about 5.5 hours. Tough slog through all that snow, I'd much rather wait and do this one when there isn't all that additional work involved.

Finally... I've been wanting to hike to this cap for awhile now. Mrs. TiE and I had set Tues, Wed or Thurs this week to go for it. Wind, sickness and nagging injuries ruled out the first 2 days so we decided we were going today regardless. We got to the parking coordinates and set out on our trek at 9:30AM. The hike starts out through an open pasture which leads to a horse trail through the forest. Lucky for us the horse trail was frozen as it looked liked it could sure be boggy in warm weather as it's really chewed up. Other than the uneven ground, it wasn't too bad to manage. At this point you come to an open meadow. We elected to cross the meadow and do a minor ascent/descent using game trails and minor bushwacking to cross the creek and hook up with another horse trail on the other side. Prior to the meadow it appeared that the horse trail went down to the creek and may in fact be the same one we hooked up with again later (???). We resisted the urge to bushwack straight to the next waypoint and instead followed this trail which curved around and hooked up with another trail that intersected the ridge trail. What great luck. No bushwacking. From then on it was just a matter of following the ridge trail right to the cap. You would lose the trail on and off higher up, but it was the type of open forest that you could easily get back on track thanks to the waypoints provided (as well as track logs... Thanks BVPete). We decided to travel light and left the snowshoes in the truck. It turned out to be a good decision as most of the snow was at higher elevations, but outside of some drifts, was quite manageable with gaiters. The only tough part today was the wind. When we came out of the forest at times to take photos or grab a SH cache in the open meadows, we encountered the worst winds we have ever experienced. Our packs were like sails that wanted to lift us off the mountain. By staying in the forest and avoiding the open areas, the wind was only noticeable by its ever present howling. We got to GZ at 1PM, after 7.5km and 700m elevation gain from parking. GZ was fantastic. We had vews to the south, west and north. The city was clearly visible today. Had it not been for the wind, we would have stayed a lot longer to take in the views. We quickly uncovered the cap, took the required photos, found SH's summit cache and headed back down the mountain. We were back at the car at around 3PM making it a 5.5 hr hike with caching, capping, lunch and rest stops. This was a really fun hike. Tons of trail variety, views in all the cardinal directions at various points along the way, meadows, open forest, hundreds of animal tracks in the snow to play "identify the animal" with. We had a fun time today. Time for the hot tub! Thanks for another cap adventure OFTH!

I certainly wasn't setting any land speed records today. A very sore throat was only the harbinger of worse things to come. I had a heck of a time catching my breath today, and even gentle uphill slopes were a challenge. And there's nothing gentle about some of the slopes that Allsmoke throws at you!

BVPete, Brutus and I hit the trail early in the morning after an interesting drive on a road that BVPete's 4WD pickup made short work of. The morning started off cool but the weather and the hike meant that quite soon we were shedding the cold weather clothing. After a bit of soggy and cattle chewed trail followed by some snowy bushwhacking, some steep bushwhacking, some hiking trail that kept disappearing in the snow, and some magnificent views along the way, we arrived at the summit. BVPete and Brutus had gotten there a fair bit ahead of me and had uncovered the cap from beneath the cairn; whatever bug I've come down with wasn't allowing me to make very good time climbing so they had a bit of time to wait for me to catch up.

The cap is in excellent shape; being protected by a cairn agrees with it.

The views from Allsmoke are simply magnificent. The sun was out, the wind was absent, and the temperatures were warm, all of which allowed us to enjoy the panoramas that nature provided us with to their fullest extent.

Thank you, outforthehunt, for this cap in a beautiful setting.
