ASC BRASS CAP IN ROCK WITH ANCHOR BOLTS AT THE TOP OF THE S PEAK OF MT INFLEXIBLE2011-09-04T20:00:00Found itrustywa
BCP531 Mount Inflexible
Sleepy_Hollow mentioned it in his log for this cap. It was an excellent day to do this hike. We started at sunrise and made quick work of the hike to Kent North. From there on we traversed the ridge between Kent and Inflexible and our speed went from flying to crawling. One hour after leaving the summit of Kent North we were only 200 meters away from the summit. It took us 6.5 hours to complete the traverse and make our way up the summit of Inflexible. The views from up here are beautiful and I was glad I had reception and could make a phone call to my wife. Just to let her know we would not be back before dark. The descent from Inflexible along the ridge and into the valley north of the ridge back to the car took another 4.5 hours which made the total travel time 15.5 hours with a total distance of 14 km. This was the hardest scramble I've ever done and we concluded that the mountain is aptly named. You won't get any flexibility from this mountain!

Thanks for the cap and the adventure!

Our capping team got an early start from the Sawmill parking area and really enjoyed the challenge of getting to the summit of Mount Inflexible via the connecting ridge with Kent North.

We made good time and headed up a forestry road and later through the forest to the ridge that leads to the Kent North Outlier. The hike up to Kent North is straight forward and in no time we were signing the summit log.

The trip across to Inflexible is simply a difficult scramble and especially since there was quite a bit of the white stuff on the ground. The trek across the ridge provides sections of significant exposure, constant loose scree, and best of all amazing photo opportunities.

It took awhile to find the cap on the summit with the summit cairn, old surveyor materials, and of course the snow. The cap is in pristine condition and waiting for it's next caching visitors.

Our track log showed a round trip distance of 14.3 km with well over 1200 metres of elevation gain. Thanks to reastick and rustywa for the terrific company on the trail and to OFTH for selecting this elevated location!

With a small delay in our plans to check out Courcelette, I decided this morning was an excellent time to do a little recon on Inflexible.

With a reasonably early start (first car into the Sawmill parking area), I headed up the north summit of Kent Ridge. Out of the parking lot you follow a series of snowshoe / cross country trails for just under a kilometre. At one of the trail junctions you head east uphill on a trail that is no longer maintained. The road ends in a few hundred metres and then you take to the forest.

The forest is a surprisingly pleasant experience, while mature it doesn’t have a lot of heavy ground cover (in other words, not a lot of bushwhacking). However the slope quickly rises and doesn’t really give you a break until the top of the first high point on the ridge. I was able to follow patches of grass to the top of the first ridge, making it rather easy – but discovered on the way back not to take any short cuts!

You lose a couple of hundred metres between the first high point and the Kent Ridge North Summit. Fortunately I was able to stay on grass covered terrain for most of the way to the top and when required to cross rocky sections, found that for the most part that the rock was stable.

I arrived at the summit about three hours after leaving the parking area. The Kent North Summit affords amazing views of a number of infrequently seen valleys, and mountain perspectives.

After snapping a load of pictures I took a closer look at the connecting ridge between Kent North and Inflexible. There is no doubt that the ridge is do-able, though at the moment a large cornice on the east side of Kent North does not allow for access to an area to by-pass a few tricky features on the ridge.

On the way back to parking it’s important to head down through the trees to the logging access roads to avoid unending pitchy slate like rock and numerous mountain meadows with fresh diggings.

Wow, what a great spot! I can hardly wait to return in a few weeks to complete the task – thanks OFTH for setting this one up!
