Weather was sunny and cool as we worked our way to the summit. Found the summit register, a cache near the summit and of course the unique survey marker which was laying loose in the summit cairn. Just a great day to be outdoors. Thanks to my two nephews for helping their old uncle complete the climb.

Well what can I say other than WOW?

Sleepy_hollow and I left Calgary at 5:00 AM and got to the trailhead at about 6:30 AM. The Sun was just starting to rise. After organizing our gear we were on our way. The trail began through a mossy drainage before heading through the trees. The trail winded in the trees for about 2.5 km before heading out onto an alpine meadow. SH and I couldn't help but take pictures all the way up. The sunrise was hitting the mountains with a brilliant red that was spectacular.

Once hitting the meadow, we worked across for about another 1.5 km before hitting the bottom of the massive scree slope. Then it was just a straight up scree slog for what seemed like forever! Once at the top of the scree cone, it was time to hitch the hiking poles and put on the helmet. The scramble that followed was the most difficult part of the hike due to the fact that some routefinding was required. There were a couple times that I led us off track, but thankfully SH's intuition and Spirko's route guided us in a safe direction. There are numerous rock ledges, slabs and slippery slopes that we had to tackle or avoid as necessary.

Once through the scramble it was another scree slog to the false summit. Once on top of the false summit it was a somewhat exposed ridgewalk that separated us from the summit.

About 4 hours after leaving the trailhead we were on the 3107 meter summit of Mount Lougheed. After finding the cap, snapping some pictures, dropping a geocache and quickly downing some lunch we were on our way down.

At 2:00 on the dot we were back at the car. In total, the trip was 14.6 km with 1400 meters of elevation which took 7.5 hours to complete.

Thanks OFTH for the AMAZING cap atop this great peak. This is by far my most memorable cap to date, although I'm a mere novice compared to SH. I'm glad I was able to spend the day with SH as we had an excellent time scrambling to the top and sharing stories along the way!

Well Brendan and I got a sunrise start from the trailhead this morning to tackle one of the highest peaks in Kananaskis Country – Mount Lougheed. We quickly gathered our packs and hit the trail after snapping a few pictures of the surrounding mountains near the trailhead.

We ended up using Bob Spirko’s track log for Mount Lougheed to provide a sense of the correct trail. At the trailhead we found a well-used trail that took us to the alpine meadows under Mount Lougheed – certainly worthy of a visit regardless of aiming for the top. The track provided critical information when we hit terrain with abundant rock bands, slabs, and plenty of loose material in a somewhat exposed location along the trail.

Brendan led the way on the trail most of the day and as a result we made amazing time reaching the summit – about four hours. Once you arrive on the summit ridge there is a very airy ridge walk to the summit cairn and this very unique cap. We quickly found the cap in the summit cairn and took the necessary shots to confirm our find.

After firming up the cap find, we took many pictures from this outstanding viewpoint and I’ll post a few of these shortly. Overall our track log showed a round trip distance of just under fifteen km with over 1400 metres of elevation gain in 7.5 hours. Simply an outstanding location for a cap – thanks OFTH for selecting this great spot and to Brendan for his fine company on the trail!
