Going to try and catch up on some logging. Takin it Easy, Momzee (Parents), little Ty and I were originally anticipating a 14km hike out to this cap. Fortunately, to our luck, when we pulled up to the closed gate of the service road leading to the cap, a service truck came and opened the gate. After talking to driver we found out he was heading up the road to remove a fallen tree and that it wouldn't be a problem if we followed him in. As chance would have it, the fallen tree was almost exactly were we planned on stopping to approach the cap. From here it was quick and easy to hike and find the cap. Since the hike was considerably shorter than we originally planned we had plenty of time to hike and cache around Shunda Mountain, Goldeye Lake and around Nordegg. Thanks for the cap!

Momzee, Ty and I were in Rocky Mtn House visiting 2Sloths this weekend. I had 2 caches near Nordegg to find so we planned a hike to check them out today. The last time I tried this one, we had just hiked Coliseum Mtn and when we got to the gate it was locked. We were too tired to do the 14km hike to this one, so we headed home. Today we were all set to make the hike. When we got to the gate it was again locked and there was now a sign that said "No On-Highway Vehicles". Even if it was unlocked we would be hooped. No problem, we were prepared to hike. Just then, a truck drove up. It was a service company who was cutting a tree that had fallen on the road. We asked him if we could follow him up and he said sure. Bonus.. an unlocked gate and an escort! When we got to the fallen tree, it was 30m from where one would park to access the cache, What luck! We made the <200m hike up the hill and found the pristine cap beside a quad trail. When we got back to the car, the service guy was finished and had left. Oh oh! The whole trip back we assumed the gate would be left open for us but you never know. Sure enough it was. In the end the long hike ended up being a short stroll. We had so much time left, we hiked up Shunda Mountain, hiked around Goldeye Lake, visited the old Nordegg cap and the new unfound Nordegg2 cap afterwards. Thanks for the cap OFTH! We had a great time today!

The day had been most enjoyable to this point with a winding drive up the Forestry Trunk road to Nordegg. The scenery and wildlife combined with that sense of remoteness were much appreciated, finding the occasional cache only added to the experience. On the journey north and to the cap site, I had encountered a medium size black bear, a very impressive 10 pt buck, a pair of wild horses and an unbelievable number of Whiskey Jacks.

Getting up close to the cap required a sense of adventure even with intel on potential routes provided by Sleepy Hollow. As luck would have it, the gate on the industry road accessed through the Nordegg industrial area, was wide open today. That was all the invitation needed and eventually got me to within a few hundred meters of the cap, although not before an aborted attempt to hike in, which had me going on a very stiff climb up a quad trail, only to find that the topo maps in my GPS had led me astray. I beat a hasty retreat to the van and continued along the road instead and eventually got where I needed to be .
The cap is well marked, elevated and in terrific shape.

We're in Nordegg for the weekend and one of.my colleagues wanted to learn more about capping. With only the coordinates in hand we headed through the townsite and picked a rather rustic road that headed into the hills in the dark. The road had plenty of deep ruts and exposed sharp rocks - but all adds to the adventure value. My capable assistant cleaned a few pieces of deadfall off the road and we eventually found the main road about one km from the cap.

We parked 200 meters from the cap and enjoyed the pleasant walk up the steep mossy hill to the cap ridge. What a great spot with a clear night sky and thousands of stars. We're glad to have picked this one up before the snow hits later this weekend. Thanks OFTH to setting up this cap and.I'll post a picture or two a little later.
