I had just got home from a week long 4500+ km road trip (see my last 49 cap entries :) And my wife and daughter say they want ot go camping - UGH! We pack up and head out to the Ghost River area with our trailer - it sure is nice having a truck now that allows us to get to these places! We had been here back in July to get the Ghost River cap. We camped a few KM away and deceided to head out for this cap. I REALLY with I had gotten a previous cachers track log first as I had to follow a 16 yr old's sense of direction - ie straight line must be best! after a km or so, Mrs. Sears Tower decided to enjoy the scenery and wait for us. The next 200m and the last clim of about 100m were the worst. Once at the top, we found a much easier way off the peak and then ahd to go back to find the Mrs. Thanks for the adventure and the cap! 2010-10-10T20:00:00 Found it Takin it Easy BCP071 Devils Gap Posted N51° 18.515 W115° 08.425 GPSr N51° 18.514 W115° 08.428 We had only been down the Transalta road as far as the Ghost River cap before and we've been wanting to get down to the river valley to do a bit of exploring. What a great place! The road in was as rough as expected, but the Expedition handled it well. The dry river bed crossing was no problem and we were soon at the parking spot for the Blackrock Mtn trail and the Devil's Gap cap off of marker 37. The views from below of Phantom Crag, Devil's Head and Blackrock Mtn were fantastic. The Blackrock Mtn view brought back memories of Mt. Burke with the abandoned lookout building visible at its summit. Littlest TiE and I made a promise to get up there together next summer. We elected to follow the same route as the BVPetes using a track log that was graciously provided by j2d2. The forest trail was soon discovered and we started the trek up the ridge. I really liked the "nessie" like trail up. There were lots of flat spots between the pitchy spots to let the lungs and knees recover. We were soon on the ridge and provided with a nice 900m ridge walk to the cap with outstanding views. The only negative was the wind which was not present until we gained the ridge and by the time we reached the cap was gusting at what seemed like 100 km/hr. It was very difficult to stand straight up during the strong gusts. We found the cap and erected a cairn behind it for future finders. After taking the required photos, finding SH's summit cache, we quickly headed back down to the forest to escape the wind. The trail back was nice and calm and we were back at the car in no time at all. The chosen route was about 6.8km in total with 425m in net elevation gain and took just under 3 hours round trip going at a leisurely pace. A great outing in a fantastic spot. Thanks for posting this one OFTH! 2009-11-05T20:00:00 Found it BVPete BCP071 Devils Gap N51° 18.516’ W115° 08.426’ Mrs BVPete and I went on a fabulous hike today to capture this cap! After careful study of the available info on the ridge we decided to access it from the Blackrock Mountain Trailhead. I was pretty sure that somewhere there would be a reasonable trail up to the summit of the ridge and sure enough j2d2 mentioned finding such a trail on his visit in 2003. He and his companions used the trail to descend the ridge after finding the cap and had, thankfully, recorded a track log. He sent it to me so we went well prepared for everything – except the wind. We had no trouble at all getting to the correct trailhead in the F-150, no snow, no ice and almost no water in the North Ghost. We were the only people parked at the trailhead so the whole area was very quiet – except for the wind. So, off we went yelling loudly as taught by Sleepy Hollow to warn all big and scary forest creatures that we were coming. J2d2’s track log was bang on as we picked up the trail immediately. The lower section was a nice single track that followed a small creek upwards. As we got higher up the trail, it became obvious that it was being used by dirt bikers that appeared to have come in from the south. The dirt bike trails continued to a small col on the ridge, then turned and went right up to the summit, amazing. We did encounter some snow at the higher elevations in the trees, but nothing too serious. Once we got to the col our 900 meter ridge walk commenced with the views beginning to unfold and my ohh my, they were absolutely spectacular. Our only problem was the wind which kept getting stronger with each meter of elevation gained until they were nothing short of ferocious at the top. Mrs BVPete stayed in some shelter just below the summit while I crab walked like a drunken sailor over to ground zero, feeling like I was about to learn how to fly, just like a bird. It took a while to find as some kind person had placed a small rock over the cap, a rock just like thousands of others on this ridge top. I persisted and eventually turned the right rock over to reveal some shiny brass. I quickly took my photos, went to find Sleepy Hollows nearby cache and vamoosed from the ridge top to join Mrs BVPete for the trek down. The entire 6.8 km roundtrip with its 410 meter elevation gain took us 3 ¼ hours (Mrs BVPete was really in the groove). We had some hot coffee waiting for us in the truck and it was very, very good! Thanks for posting this cap ofth, it makes a great hike with few navigation problems and takes you to a truly awesome place. The cap numbers are hidden by a happy face cloud that briefly formed in the clear blue sky. Edited for grammer! Found while almost killing ourselves getting to it and the nearby Sleepy Hollow cache. 2007-07-19T20:00:00 Found it Sleepy_hollow BCP071 - Devils Gap I just got the good old hiking boots back and needed a good test to check out the newly sewn boots. I knew the parking area for the cap, a few kilometres before the dip down to the river. So using a bike I rode down to the end of the ATV trail and enjoyed a one kilometre or so hike to the cap site. The last three hundred metres to the cap site are pretty amazing when you see the height of the cliff that needs to be navigated. I headed south and found a suitable approach in short order. The views from the top were simply amazing as you could see Calgary, Black Rock Mountain, Devils Head and many other landmarks from this fine location. It took a bit of work to find the cap as it just sits on the ground on an embedded piece of rock. The metal rods described in the hint are not well marked and are themselves only flush with ground level. The Alberta Survey sign doesn't mark the cap site at all, and is probably 10 - 15 metres NE of the cap. Just a great afternoon - TFTH and I'll send along the pictures.
