After completing a little research we came upon the best approach to this some what remote cap. There was a decent game trail for the last 100 metres to the cap site where I spotted two of what I suspect might be three GPs in the area. The GPS settled down beside the second GP and I cleaned up the cap which was in excellent shape - this cap was a true adventure - now on to those even more remote locations in the north - thanks OFTH for setting this one up!

This cap has been on Dave's 'to do' list for a while now. With the family along for the trip he contacted the owner of local Bed N Breakfast who was willing to take us to the site in his boat. Brian Hamilton was a fountain of information about the area and knew exactly where we needed to go - after the quick scramble to the cap, we were treated to a lovely sunset cruise of the area. This was a super fun cap and definitely personifies the best of geocaching! Thanks for the adventure!

          <groundspeak:text encoded="True">
BCP080 Cold Lake - Every time I have been in Cold Lake over the past many years I have looked longingly across the lake knowing that this cap was calling my name from the far shore. The call became a crescendo that had to be answered. We made plans to charter a boat but failed on the first day due to high winds and waves. The next day was perfect and we headed out from French Bay, followed the shoreline east until we were across the Saskatchewan border and then angled north across the bay for a landing spot. Our Captain picked a spot on the shore that he could get his boat the closest but then it was time to get wet. His boat took about 3 feet of draft so we were in the water almost waist deep to get to shore holding out electronics above the water. We scrambled up the bank with GPS, Metal Detector, digging tools and cleaning tools in hand as there was no way we were going to have made this trek and not come back with the numbers. A couple of swipes across the grass with the metal detector and we were greeted with that oh so lovely sound of solid metal ... brass! We did our celebration dances, exchanged high-fives, and took the money shots. Back down the bank, into the water and back into the boat. We then took a slow cruise alone the shore, spotted a bald eagle, learned some history from our guide, stopped for some photos of the sunset in a sheltered bay and absorbed the evening and the success. It was about that time when our soaked clothing started to get the better of us and we needed something dry and warm so we headed back to shore. The call of the cap had been answered and again, the pursuit of a brass cap resulted in a most memorable adventure. Thanks for this very special cap and the accompanying adventure.

With a late freeze up we delayed the trip until the ice was well frozen. The ice was rough in few patches but we made it without any major problems or running over any ice fishermen. The hike up the hill with the winter conditions is still a challenge. A great view from the cap and a nice trip. Looking forward to trying it in the summer. Although we had to remove a little snow the cap was found and in great shape.

Thanks for the Cap, OFTH

That's right you're seeing correctly, bcp080 it's about time this one gets found. Well vixie logged a find on it but I'm sure purely by mistake. I doubt she was within 100 miles of this cap.

The kids had wanted to take the trailer this weekend but the high winds on Friday convinced me to do otherwise. Besides with only the boat behind me I could make a few stoppes along the way

I've been meaning to drag the boat up there over the past few years to get out to this one but always seemed to have other things in the way. Now with the pending plans to unload the boat I thought I better get this one done.

I planned on gettting out on Saturday but the weather wan't cooperating and we had a gathering planned for Saturday so it was Sunday come "Heck or high water".

I procrastinated and hung out drinking coffee in the morning all the while watching the intermitent rain and clouds roll by. By 10:30 I was antsy and decided to head out. I've been on this large lake before and knew it could get nasty with the mildest of breezes. The best approach for the cap was in French Bay and by launching from the provincial campground launch I would only have a few km of wide open water exposed to the northerly winds skipping over about 30 miles of lake.

I was suprised to see that the lake was quite calm today. There were many boats on the lake and the largest wav was from wakes of boats. I made short order of the 6 plus km I had to travel across the lake. The gps was pointing up top a ridge so I crused the shore line looking for a good spot to put in. I fouldn a nice spot with mostly just gravel and towards the northerly end of the ridge. Someone had even left a mooring line tied to a tree, couldn't get better.

I hiked up the bank and made my way toward the cap location. Once up top and walking along the ridge I made sure I was made plenty of noise to avoid any possiblel bear encounters. I racket did scare up a nice buck that did startle my but only for a second.

I quickly spotted the ground post 50 meters away as I rounded a tree and headed straight for it. I surveyed the gound infront of the gp but didn't spot the cap but did see a typical depression in the ground. I gave it a few pokes with the long screw driver but didn't hit anyhting. OK time to sniff. One pass gave up the location right next to the depression. I pushed the grass back and exposed a pristene cap.

I took a number of pictures of the cap, location and view of the lake then hiked back to the boat. Since it was so nice out I decided I would do bit of fishing since I was here anyways. I lucked out and landed a 64 cm pike. Although it was a "keeper" I let it go since I didn't have my knives with me. I decided to head back once I head the thunder crack from over top the ridge. i was still in the bay and couldn't see what was rolling in from the northwest. Once I did get around the point I could see the looming rainn cloud rolling in over the north end of the lake.

A cap, A keeper fish and calm water. Ya can't ask anymore of Cold Lake.
