When I found that the southern approach option was a wash, I tried from the northern approach with much better success. Leave HWY 40 at N53° 39.320' W118° 12.177'. At N53° 39.829' W118° 10.615' veer right and follow this road as far as you can. I decided the road looked just too dicey past N53° 38.739' W118° 08.284'. In drier weather one might be able to drive past here in an appropriate vehicle but you can tell from the attempts at installing logs to help with traction in spots that this section of road is perennially sub-standard. It was today. It was about 1.5 km (as the crow flies) to the cap from where I started walking. After walking down the road, at times having to work hard to keep my feet dry - I was right not be be driving on this - I decided to take a big turn south at N53° 38.442' W118° 07.475' to get over to the railroad itself. That worked pretty well, taking me through a clearing and soon later to the tracks. From there it was a quick jaunt down the tracks and then up to the cap. I have to say that when I arrived near gz I found the cap freakishly quickly (I don't get to say that often). Just when I got to the top of the berm, I noticed an indent in the mossy ground but even more noticeable were the nearby trees festooned in pink flagging tape. Okay, (thought I) before I check out the spot near the tape, I'll poke here with my hiking pole. The result was the sweet "tink, tink, tink" of brass. After clearing off about a quarter inch of moss, the pristine cap had some fresh air to breath again. This was a really fun cap find. Prior research, combined with good situation decisions took me through some cool scenery and ultimately to the goal. (And again, I don't always get to say those things either!) 🙂 Thanks very much for the cap! 2012-05-17T20:00:00 Found it Sears Tower BCP220 - Grande Cache RR It appears that they are doing some logging and/or pipeline work in the area, so we were able to drive to within a few hundred meters. I would not recommend travel by a car or any vehicle without good clearance! We then crossed the creek - too lazy to walk around it! TFTH! 2010-11-08T20:00:00 Found it Takin it Easy BCP220 Grande Cache RR Posted N53° 38.279 W118° 07.163 GPSr N53° 38.280 W118° 07.163 This was the cache I really wanted to get to today. The plan was to ride my bike all the way in, but my bike was in the deceased geobuggy, so I brought Mrs. TiE's bike along. When I got to the route in, the trail was snow covered mud and quite hilly. I decided to bail on the bike idea and set out on foot. I still had 3 hours of daylight left and I hoped that this hike would take no more than 2 hours. The trail was littered with animal tracks. I spotted tracks from a moose, deer, coyotes, rabbits, 2 sizes of cougar and a large dog (or wolf). Given the late hour and the obvious popularity of the trail, I had my animal deterrents at hand and sang out loud most of the way there and back. In the end I only spotted 2 birds during the entire hike. When I got to GZ, I spotted the fallen station marker, but saw no sign of the cap. I walked back and forth and poked and prodded and nothing. I was seriously considering bailing when I notice that the GPSr had settled on a position up the bank from the station marker. I jumped up and my foot quickly went in a depression that was found to be hiding the cap under snow. Refer to my context shot for the position of the cap relative to the marker. The lath is no longer there. The total hike was 10km and I made it back to the car in just under 2 hours. A most satisfying cap find. This wasn't the first time today that the GPSr's road maps in this area would be ... ummm, imaginative? A cap for another trip. 2009-08-14T20:00:00 Found it Sleepy_hollow BCP220 - Grande Cache RR We decided to wear the rubber boots for this short trek and it certainly was a good decision. The cutlines we checked out on the way to the cap all had significant boggy spots that made rubber boots a necessity. We quickly found the cap site and everything was all ready to go for our arrival, as we only needed to take a picture of the cap. Nice spot with a little adventure mixed in - TFTH and fun - the picture is on the way!
