We were really wanting to get out hiking again in July but the weather forecast wasn't looking all that great, so we started considering half-day hike options and eventually opted to tackle Pigeon Mountain. Ended up taking just under 5 hours from start to finish. Highlights of the trip included surprising a mule deer (thankfully not a bear), spotting bear tracks and scat along the trail (along with bear bite marks on some of the trees), finding a few geocaches along the way, lots of wildflowers, encountering some long-time friends we hadn't seen in a long while while hiking back down, strong and blustery winds all along the ridge portion of the hike and - of course - finding this brass cap, our first in many months! Thanks for the motivation to get out despite a less than perfect weather forecast. Information has already been sent.

The weather forecast was too nice to stick around the house today and Mrs. TiE was still recovering from some back problems, so I decided to do a solo expedition up Pigeon Mountain today. The "plan" was to bike the first 5km to the trailhead junction of the main and alternate routes up, hike up the main route, hike back the alternate route and then bike back to the car. Everything went according to plan except for the first part. After a few failed attempts at some consistent riding, I elected to take my bike on a nice long walk to start the day off. It sure paid off on the route back however. I hit the trail at 9AM and ditched the bike at the junction at just after 10AM. I didn't spot a single animal today except for a squirrel or chipmunk high up in a tree that scared the heck out of me when a pine comb hit me on the back as it was jumping from branch to branch. I was glad no one was around to hear my response. Once I broke through the treeline, the famous long slog up started and continued on and on. Once the profile flattened out, it was actually a pretty pleasant walk along the wide alpine ridge. The wind started to whip up and by the time I made the summit at 11:30, it was howling and creating a pretty good wind chill. I was glad I had my touque and polar fleece with me. The views were really good today in all directions. I headed down to the cap, took a pile of photos, had lunch and headed over to the parapet. I found bearberry's goat trail and it took me straight up the shale to the peak without the need to do the bends shown in the trail maps. What an interesting spot. Great views in all directions including the peak I had just summited. The hike down the meadow was quite enjoyable and I was soon back on the main trail headed for my bike. I highly recommend doing the circuit of both routes as it provides lots of different viewpoints. Once I got to my bike, the 5km ride back was done in under 15 minutes and that was riding the brakes to not have a surprise animal encounter. I still hit 62km/hr for one short stretch with an average of over 20km/hr. It was well worth pushing the bike up for the fun ride back. It was reminiscent of Baril Creek. All in all a great hike in the mountains today. 5 caches, 19km, about 1000m in elevation change and 5hrs for the total trip including caching, breaks and lunch. Thanks for another fun outing OFTH!
