<p>Spent the night in Sundre and we decided to do a little hike before check in, so here we went. Had hoped to do another in the area, but we started from Calgary too late - Oh well TFTH</p>

<p>Neither the cap nor the obligatory Sleepy_hollow cache have been found in four years, and things have changed just a bit. The cutline that SH indicated as a trail has now been obliterated by logging, and coincidentally his trailhead coords are now the coords of a new logging road that takes you somewhat closer to the cap/cache than you could drive before.</p>
<p>I parked at the road's end, 570m from the cache, and the first 100m offered easy going through the cutblock. The rest was just plain old bush walking, and it wasn't too bad. Got to the top, where I found the guard post but no sign of the cap. I poked the grasses <em>gingerly</em> with my pole around the area - thank you wild horses for taking a dump <em>right there</em> - but in the end it was a drag of the heel at the hint-specified distance that uncovered the long-unvisited cap. BCP458 - Strawberry Ridge</p>
<p>Found the cutline/trail using previous pics ( spotted the tire on the deadfall as I was coasting by ).</p>
<p>Very nice hike most of the way, needle-lined rolling trail until the last 130 meters or so, then the real work began, yikes! Signs of previous cappers, boot-disturbed/gouged dirt on the way up, frozen a bit so it kind of helped on the way up.</p>
<p>Made it to the top, enjoyed the view for a while, took some pics. It was starting to get dark so I was worried that I'd run out of light before I hit the quad trail so I had to hustle down fast. In the end, I was on the road back to Calgary for about 15 minutes before the sunlight disappeared. A quick shower then time for some Beer n' Ribs ( OK, Coke n' Ribs ) with my geocaching homies ( Red90, Peanutbutterbreadandjam, 80malibu, and CBfan ).</p>

<p>We had taken the day to explore the trunk road south of where we were camped. I convinced the girls to come for the hike up to the ridge by telling them it wasn't far and that there was only a bit of elevation lol We followed a quad trail to within 120 meters of the cap but form there we were on our own to find a way to to the ridge. We had a great time with good weather. tfth</p>

<p>I found the quad trail right where Sleepy_Hollow's coordinates indicated it would be, and that made the first 900 metres or so very easy going. Though the trail hasn't been used in quite some time (no tire marks, lots of tall vegetation in the centre), there's virtually no deadfall across the trail. I think there was only one spot where I had to go around a downed tree. As the trail began to curl in a south westerly direction and move away from the cutline, I thought for a while that it was going to lead me right up to the ridge top. Nope! As the trail ascended it became more and more overgrown and less distinct, until with about 120 metres to go, it simply vanished and the bushwhacking began. I'm sure it only seemed like those last 120 metres took longer than the first 900 metres! I finally broke free into the open meadow that tops the ridge. The dwarf dogwood that had carpeted the forest floor gave way to tiger lilies, blue eyed grass, hare bells, and half a dozen other wildflowers I didn't recognize. I headed for the highest point in the meadow and soon spotted the reference post, with the marker post quick behind.</p>
<p>I actually didn't see the cap right away, as it turned out to be hidden behind the remains of a Charlie Brown's Christmas Tree right beside it. The ground level cap is in pristine condition, so much so that it was obvious that whoever stamped it was having a bad day. I never would have thought of stamping an upside down 7 beside a 1 to change it into a 4 - oops!</p>
<p>Did I mention the bugs yet? The bugs were just [i]awful[/i] today. Even being doused in bug juice didn't dissaude them; they just followed me wherever I walked. And when I stopped, as I had to do to take the pictures of the cap, they called in the reserves and swarmed me. Guess I'm going to have to go back to the deep woods bug juice this year!</p>
<p>I didn't find any better way off the top of the ridge back down to the quad trail, but I did find a break in the trees that afforded a view or two. All in all, it was a fine day for a short hike. Thanks for the cap, outforthehunt!</p>
