The cap is under the rock just behind Brendan714 on his left side, quick find, in very good condition. 2010-09-26T20:00:00 Found it Takin it Easy BCP470 Baril Creek Trail Posted N50° 20.901 W114° 42.873 GPSr N50° 20.900 W114° 42.874 Bearspaw Rednecks and I decided that we would enjoy the nice weather and do the bike/hike up the Baril Creek Trail to the cap today. When we arrived at parking the wind was really howling. As we progressed throught the mostly uphill trek towards the cap, occasional droplets of rain added to the wind. Where was the 20C and sunny that was forecasted (yah.... I know)? By the time we crossed the creek and ascended the ridge, the rain was light but falling steadily. The views up top were still quite exceptional, but our time up there was significantly shortened and we didnt take the time as planned to explore further to the north. By the time we reached our bikes, the rain had stopped and the weather was beginning to clear. We had great conversation as we pushed the bikes back up the hill from the creek bank. So great that we missed the turn onto the Baril Creek Trail and continued on the Fording Pass Trail towards Etherington Creek. As the continual uphill progressed we both questioned whether we remembered going this far downhill to the creek. Both of us thought something was weird, but instead of checking the GPSr, we continued on about 800m and 100m up in elevation gain along the trail before we realized our mistake. DOH!!! It was a great ride down, however, and this continued along the Baril Creek Trail all the way to the car. What a great ride out. It made the tough ride in worthwhile. The highlight of the ride out was a face to face encounter I had with a timberwolf walking along the trail. I came around the corner and there he was 20m in front of me. He was huge. As I hit the brakes, he looked startled and darted up into the woods. That was very cool! My first wolf sighting on the trails. Of course the weather was hot and sunny when we returned to the car. A great 18km trek today with a few caches and a cap. Thanks for another fine one OFTH! 2010-06-26T20:00:00 Found it BVPete BCP470 Baril Creek Trail N50° 20.902’ W114° 42.874’ Our hike commenced at 8:00AM under mostly blue skies with just a few white clouds, a perfect day for a hike in the mountains with two friends and a dog. We had three caches and a cap to find along this very enjoyable trail which gave us little trouble other than a few boggy spots and a short section of nasty bushwacking ( my companions kindly didn’t mention I was the one that lead them into that bad area). Tucker did get to take an unexpected swim in Baril Creek, but I am sure the plunge cool him down considerably. I don’t have much to add that has not already been said by DanOCan and van der Decken in their logs. Let’s just say that the hike was terrific, the weather was fine, my companions were great and I am well satisfied with the day. Oh did I tell you DanOCan has turned into a mountain goat! 2010-06-26T20:00:00 Found it van der Decken BCP470: Baril Creek Trail Elev. 2005 metres DanOCan suggested going after this cap today, and I'm glad he did. An 8am start from the trailhead meant that we (DanOCan + Tucker, BVPete and I) arrived at the cap well before noon. It was a perfect day for a hike. The sun was shining, the winds light, and the bugs, well, I don't know where they were but they weren't anywhere near the Baril Creek Trail. The forestry road is in good shape, with the exception of several water hazards along the way. The humans picked their way around the edges of the waterlogged bits, whereas Tucker took pure doggy delight in plunging right through the deepest parts. I likely could have ridden my commuter bike at least as far as the Baril Creek crossing, but no further; the creek was running deep and fast. I have the 2nd edition of Daffern's trail guide, which means that its trail info is circa 1985. And yet, it's still amazingly current. The two log bridge over Baril Creek is still there. While the human contingent of our group made it over without incident, our canine companion Tucker slipped off and had a full body immersion in the cold rushing water. While he emerged downstream at the ford apparently no worse for wear, on the return trip he firmly declined to even set foot on the logs, and elected instead for a cold swim across the ford. Since he actually had to swim, I'm glad we didn't use the ford; that water was a lot deeper than it looked. We were a little confused as to which way to go after the creek crossing. The trails on the ground didn't match those in Red90's SATM, Moun10Bike's NWTM, Ibycus' topo or OSM. Knowing we had to go up regardless, we did just that; go up. After several kilometres of gentle up and down, we arrived at the "up" part of the trip in earnest. In general the bushwhacking wasn't too bad save for one section where the deadfall was pretty dense. After carefully picking our way through that section the slope wasn't quite as steep, but it was still huffing & puffing time for me. Finally, with less than 70 metres to go we left the forest and arrived on the bare ridge top. We spotted the reference posts immediately and BVPete spotted the UPoR protecting the cap soon afterward. As is usual for a backcountry cap, it's in fine shape. Technically it's below ground level, but it's a shallow pit covered with small rocks. There's no marker post for the cap itself, but between the reference posts and the UPoR, you shouldn't have any trouble finding it. The views from the ridge are simply spectacular. We sat down for a bite of lunch after finding the cap and took in the views. It doesn't matter which way you look; you get a "ohhh.... ahhh...." <img src="/images/icons/icon_smile_wink.gif" border="0" align="middle" /> As I said, a perfect day for a hike, and a great destination. Thanks go to outforthehunt for selecting this cap, to DanOCan for suggesting it, and to BVPete for agreeing to come along. 2010-06-26T20:00:00 Found it DanOCan BCP470: Baril Creek Trail I made plans more than three weeks ago to tackle this cap with van der Decken and BVPete. Today, right on schedule, we met at the trailhead at 8am and set off. This ended up being a really good hike, with our round trip distance being about 17km and taking just over five hours to complete. The trip up was made interesting due to all the deadfall, but after lunch at the cap site a simpler route down was found. No shorter or less steep, but much less deadfall. We'll be sure to send our track logs in to Red90, because the Southern Alberta Trail Maps for this area seem really out of whack, much as Sleepy Hollow had warned me about on Thursday at Pizza and Beer. Simply a great hike with great company, Tucker is already asleep on his bed so it's even "puppy approved".
