On the way to the trail head, I saw a small black bear near the town site. Once parked along the road (it was pretty busy hear today) I unloaded my bike and it the trail. I am SOOO out of shape! Had to walk my bike a lot. When riding, it seamed like my seat was tilting backwards. Part way up, I checked and the seat wasn't moving, the seat post was bending! No more sitting down in fear of no more seat! Made it to the cap site and then back to the truck. On the way back, I was able to ride most of the way by standing. I saw numerous other people much younger than me walking their bikes! I am still out of shape, but I didn't feel quite as bad. 2013-03-18T20:00:00 Didn't find it Ringrat BCP505 - Akimina Pass I was camped about 20 m from this monument on the night of the 18th/19th but the monument was still very buried. No sign of it to be seen. 2011-10-05T20:00:00 Found it BVPete BCP505 Akamina Pass N49° 01.682' W114° 03.453' Mrs BVPete and I are spending a week in Waterton and of course used the opportunity to make our official visit to this fine border survey monument. Now, Waterton at this time of the year especially during rainy weather, is essentially deserted which is great for finding the best trailer spots, but it also means the trails are pretty lonely. We have always held the opinion that the park is oversupplied with bears so lonely trails make us a little nervous. Anyways, we arrived at the trail-head around 9:00AM and headed up the wide, well graded Akamina Pass trail in a light drizzle. This is a low elevation pass that never makes it anywhere near the tree line so expansive views are limited, however the close in type views are very beautiful with golden Larches, fall yellows, oranges and reds contrasted with many shades of green. Actually, you have to go a little higher to see the golden Larches, as we did on the trail to Forum Lake after visiting the cap. We had no trouble finding the border marker at the height of the pass. It sure has seen better days when compared with a photo I found of it just after it had been placed in 1913(ish). That photo, as well as other interesting material is from a book titled “Report of the Commission Appointed to Delimit the Boundary between the Provinces of Alberta and British Columbia”. Maybe it was a grizzly bear attacking the monument, as noted in the border survey report, at one of the other monuments placed in the pass<img src="/images/icons/icon_smile.gif" border="0" align="middle" /> - see photo of text. After taking the required “cap” pictures we carried on with our hike to Forum Lake. I should also say that after all that worrying, we did not encounter any bears, or for that matter, any other kind of creature whatsoever!
