We planned to hike to BCP509 today but did not get far. There was a herd of cattle blocking the gate and two issues made us turn and leave the cattle alone. There was an old, sickly cow rocking back and forth in an effort to get up and out of our way. The second problem was a small calf lying on the road that never moved despite being nudged by its mother. We believe it was dead. It only seemed right to leave the cattle in peace.

What a great Saturday morning hike SH and I had today. I had us at 12.3 km and over 4 hours round trip with an elevation gain of 360m that included amost an hour shoveling snow to find the cap. The views from GZ were surprisingly fine with Mt Burke and Plateau Mt dominating the NW view and the rolling ranchlands dominating the east. We managed to stay on well defined trails up to about 400-500m from the cap where we followed lesser defined animal tracks towards GZ. The last 50m was a real vertical slog on which I'm not sure the snowshoes aided us very much. There were 3 reference markers that along with the hint greatly aided in finding the cap once we acquired the hint from home. Doh! We cleared a pretty large area of snow before we clued into that one. Had my Oregon not decided to become a paper weight this morning, we would have had that info at our fingertips. We tied several strands of survey tape on the adjacent shrub to the cap to aid the next finder. Thanks OFTH for posting this one and getting me out of my short hibernation and thanks to SH for coming along and keeping me company.

TiE and I got a later start than normal this morning to check out this well positioned cap. We parked at the end of the access road and enjoyed a 11.9 km round trip hike with approximately 400 metres of elevation gain.

After parking we followed hard packed snowmobile tracks to within 1.2 km of the cap site. We headed into the trees with the snowshoes and quickly progressed up a fairly steep hill with lots of powdery snow.

After arriving at the ridge top we quickly spotted the three Alberta Survey posts and assumed the cap would be in an elevated position near the centre of the reference markers. After clearing a fair piece of ridge top and not being able to find the cap, we decided to use the call a friend feature and TiE quickly had the cap distance from each of the survey markers in hand. This extended our search area and TiE quickly found the well hidden cap in a low spot on the ridge. Whew - sure glad we found it.

Thanks OFTH for setting up this fine cap and to TiE for the terrific company on the trail!
