After a fantastic hike up Coliseum Mtn, GeoJamie22 and I enjoyed some lunch at a perfect viewpoint with a seat. Once we were done, we packed up and headed over to the summit cairn, about 30 meters away. I had assumed that this cap was right at the summit. Turns out it was 30 meters away - right back near where we were! We had lunch within 5 meters of the survey post. It was a [FOUND] quickly when we got there.

Great spot!

Yep, this one's a goodie. We finally made it out to Coliseum mountain, then made it up Coliseum mountain to find this cap with a perfect view. We never saw anyone else on the trail so we didn't have to share he peak either. Now I can look up here anytime we drive past I know I've done it! I took lots of pictures but something's gone wonky so we'll see if any end up here.

Having spent the night at the nearby Shunda Hostel, I was able to make an early start this morning and started the long slog up the switch-backed trails up to Coliseum mountain.

I thought those switchbacks would never end (but at the same time, god bless them!) but eventually once you gain the altitude, the trail opens up to the wonderful vista of the Coliseum west summit and the valley below. It's an awesome view and today some threatening dark clouds (60% chance of showers the forecast said) put an edge on the experience.

After making my way across a very distinct scree trail to access the ridge, it was only a forest-lined trail along that ridge that deposited me at the cliffs of the namesake summit.

Once I made the last steep push to the summit, legs decidedly rubbery at this point, I was rewarded with - breath-taking view, yes, but also the beginning of a spattering of rain. And hey, some of that rain is bouncing off of me! It turns out the rain was laced with ice pellets too - on July 5, I'm getting whacked by ice pellets. Well, the altitude may have had something to do that.

All I was able to find the "cap" in short order after arriving and took the trophy pics of it along with many others in an attempt to capture the awesome view from this spot.

After lingering a while, that rain spatter disappeared and it was time to go. I met a nice couple from Red Deer just as I started along the ridge again, the first human sightings of the day. After chatting with them we parted and a bit of drama ensued along the ridge: an encounter with a fearless, ticked-off mother grouse protecting her brood.

As I passed an indistinct bit of trail flotsom suddenly a grouse flew in front of me past my shins and landed about a foot away from me. My first thought was "Wow, glad this thing didn't start up and suddenly fly up flapping its wings, scaring the bejebus out of me" - like every other grouse encounter I've experienced during a hike. But then it registered: this thing isn't flying away from me; it's coming straight for me. Well, not straight. It was taking a seeminly random a path scurringly around in my general direction as if following the path of a imaginary unravelled ball of yarn. My brain was struggling to make sense of what was going on here.

The strange sight of this mad mother beelining for my shins had the effect the grouse was wanting, that little terror of a ticked off mom backed me up. It was then I noticed the chicks scurrying out of the trail-side bush and making their way in the opposite direction. Now it was all making sense. She was coming at me to keep me away from her chicks. What bravado! Size-wise, this is pretty much the same as me attacking Godzilla's ankles with a spoon and expecting to back him up.

I started talking to the mom, trying to assure her I was just passing through. She seemed to take me on my word and retreated in the direction of her escaping chicks, mooning me with her puffed up plumage.

The rest of the hike down the mountain was less dramatic, especially since I couldn't quite figure out how to access the newer cap on the east summit. My legs persuaded my brain that I'd have to leave that energy-sapping way finding puzzle to another day. Kudos to other folks who have done both in one day.

But you know in Japan they have a saying, A wise man will climb Mt Fuji once; a fool will climb Mt Fuji twice. I wonder if climbing up Coliseum Mountain as second time falls into the same category.

As Sleepy_hollow and I continued our hike around the Coliseum circuit, picking up BCP705 in the process, I stopped to grab this cap on the west summit. We stayed just long enough to find the cap and cache as high Chinook winds made conditions uncomfortable up top. In the whole, this was a very nice winter hike. Thanks for the cap.

We chose (well, I chose) the more adventurous route because there was a new cache along that route.
